Match Play Team Competition

The Minnesota Public Golf Association sponsors Match Play Team Competitions for the member clubs of the MPGA.

All matches are played under four ball match play rules which are found under Rule 30 of the USGA Rules of Golf. Team members play their better ball against the better ball of their opponents, match play competition using no handicaps. One point is awarded for winning each nine hole stipulated round, and one point for winning the total 18 hole stipulated round maximum of three points for each match. USGA rules govern all play, as well as applicable local rules.

Team participants must be an amateur member of the Minnesota Public Golf Association member club they are representing in Match Play Team Competition and have a current handicap index for 2009. Players who belong to more than one club may only participate for one club during the current season of competition within each type of Match Play Team Competition.

The MPGA sponsors two (2) types of Match Play Team Competition which are:

  • 24-man/16-man competition which play on various Sundays throughout the golf season.
  • Senior 8-man Team competition which play on various Tuesdays throughout the golf season.
    • Senior competitors must be at least 55 years of age as of the date of competition.
Dates of Competition 24-man/16-man
  • Matches are to be played on scheduled date unless both captains agree to a change due to a club conflict.
  • The MPGA class chairman must be notified of any date change before the match is to take place.
  • Scheduled dates for 16/24-man are May 3, June 7. July 12, August 2 , September 13 and September 27.
  • 24-Man Teams (Class "A" and Class "AA") will play home/away matches on May 2/June 7 with the winners advancing to a home /away series on July 12/August 2, the winners of that series will play the final home/away series on September 13/September 27.
    • NOTE: If a total match is tied, each team shall select 2 team members for a sudden death playoff starting on a tee designated by the course manager or representative. The winner of the match will advance to the next round of competition.
  • 16-Man Teams (Class "BB", Class "B", Class "C") will play a round robin competition on May 2/June7/July12 and August 2 against 4 opponents in their class.
    • Teams will be ranked by 1) Wins and 2) Match Points. Tie breaker will be the results of head to head season competition, then a coin flip.
    • The top four teams from each class will advance to the first round of playoffs on September 13th at a neutral site.
      • 1st place will play 4th place and 2nd place will play 3rd place.
      • The winners will advance to the championship on September 27th at a neutral site.

  • Teams will play a round robin schedule on these dates: May 5, May 19, June 2, June 23, July 14, August 4 and August 18.
  • The top four teams from each league will advance to the first round of playoffs on a date to be determined around September 8th at a neutral site.
  • 1st place will play 4th place and 2nd place will play 3rd place.
  • The winners will advance to the championship on September 22nd at a neutral site.
